Boost in Investor Confidence
Recent indications of potential rate cuts by the US Federal Reserve in 2024 have significantly boosted investor confidence. The surge in the Index of Industrial Production (IIP) to a 16-month high in October and positive remarks on India’s GDP forecast by the RBI have also contributed to a positive investor sentiment. Additionally, falling crude oil prices and sustained FPI inflows have further bolstered market optimism.
Record Highs and Notable Gainers
The Nifty 50 reached an all-time high of 21,492 points, concluding the week with a strong rally of 2.32%. Notable gainers included HCL Technologies, LTIMindtree, Hindalco Industries, NTPC, and others, with gains ranging from 6% to 7.5%. The S&P Sensex also achieved a new record high of 71,605 points, reflecting a gain of 2.37%. The mid and small-cap stocks also saw positive momentum, with the BSE Mid-Cap Index gaining 2.57% and the BSE Small-Cap Index rallying 2.38%.
Tech Sector Surges
The Nifty IT index experienced a robust surge of 7.15% last week, following the Federal Open Market Committee’s decision to maintain its key interest rate. The shift towards a more dovish stance by the committee, hinting at potential rate cuts in 2024, fueled strong buying interest in Indian IT stocks. Notable gainers in the IT sector included Persistent Systems, Coforge, MphasiS, and HCL Technologies.
Foreign Portfolio Investments
Foreign Portfolio Investors (FPIs) extended their investment streak for the second consecutive month in December. After reversing course in November and injecting ₹9,000 crore into Indian equities, FPIs increased their buying activity in December, acquiring ₹42,733 crore worth of Indian equities. The positive outlook on India’s growth prospects and the attractiveness of Indian government bonds have driven FPI interest in the market.
Crude Oil Trends
Crude oil prices saw a modest increase last week due to dovish signals from the US Federal Reserve. Brent crude futures closed at $76.78 per barrel, up by 1.24%, while WTI crude futures rose by 0.28% to $71.43 per barrel. Despite this short-term recovery, both Brent and WTI are on track for their third consecutive monthly loss, impacted by factors such as increased US gasoline inventories, surge in US crude exports, and economic uncertainties in China.
Technical Outlook
The Nifty 50’s bullish momentum continues, with the index achieving a new all-time high and marking its seventh consecutive weekly gain. Resistance is observed at 21,500, with the potential for further rally upon breaching this level. Support is currently positioned at 21,300, with immediate target levels at 21,700 and the possibility of reaching 22,000. Swastika Investmarts’ Santosh Meena highlighted key support and resistance levels for the Nifty amidst the ongoing market dynamics.
In conclusion, the recent economic trends and market movements present a mix of opportunities and challenges for investors, highlighting the need for a comprehensive understanding of the evolving landscape to make informed investment decisions.
